HL7 Version 3 Standard: Identification Service (IS), Release 1

The Identification Service (IS) – also known as the Identification and Cross-Reference Service (IXS) – provides a set of capabilities to manage and retrieve identifying information for various kinds of entities (such as people, organisations and devices). This Service Functional Model defines the functional requirements of an IS/IXS. Having unique identifiers and a standard way to search, retrieve and manage entity data will allow healthcare applications and healthcare enterprises to find, exchange and reference entity data while maintaining the data’s context and associations.
